Scale your software reliability with bug-free applications

On the latter front, Android 13 also laid the groundwork for the Pixel Tablet to function as a stationary Smart Display and then allow you to detach its screen and use it as a tablet. The software introduced support for a whole new series of shared-surface widgets and screensavers along with an expanded multiuser profile system for that purpose. Android 13, launched in August 2022, is one of Google’s strangest Android versions yet. The software is simultaneously one of the most ambitious updates in Android history and one of the most subtle version changes to date. It’s an unusual duality, and it ultimately all comes down to what type of device you’re using to experience the software. Android 11’s new media player appears as part of the system Quick Settings panel, while the new connected-device control screen comes up whenever you press and hold your phone’s physical power button.

How to Write a Game Design Document GDD

gdd game design document template

The whole development team will refer to the GDD throughout the game’s development, from early pre-production through launch. That includes designers, artists, programmers, sound designers, producers, QA testers, and others. There are many great game design document examples to draw inspiration from.

Let's Talk About Your Project

We prefer a few Google Slides or PowerPoint slides with Mood Boards - screen shots lifted from similar games or other art found online. And when it comes to system design and understanding how variables fit together, the value of spreadsheets is, well, incalculable. Which means that it can only be a useful tool if how you use it suits the type of information you want to explain and who you’re explaining it to. For example, if you’re building a world map, but you’re not sure where everything is going to go yet, the first version of your design should probably be one that allows you to easily move things around. When you’re deciding on the best way to present your design, it can often help to think about what you will do with it once it’s finished.

Sidekick also allows you to instantly generate unique concept art, storyboards, and other images in a variety of styles – 2D and 3D, abstract and photorealistic, detailed and simple. You can connect Nuclino to a wide range of other tools, including Discord, Google Drive, Miro, and more, seamlessly integrating it into your game design process. Or, if you make your page bigger, there’s no reason you can’t combine multiple elements into a single design, so long as the design document still solves a single problem and has a primary focus. So while one-page documents are helpful because of their often visual focus, their one-page limit generally encourages a more useful and more efficient design process as well.

Estimated Budget and General Timeline

Writing down the details of how something is supposed to work can be extremely useful, as it gets the idea out of your head and forces you to describe exactly how it’s supposed to function. One solution is to write a Game Design Document, which is typically a detailed guide that describes what your game is and how it will work. Or maybe you need to pitch your project in some way, to a publisher, as a part of a crowdfunding campaign, or as an early access project, and you need a way to show others what the game is going to be like when it’s finished. This might be because you’ve got plans and ideas for your project that you don’t want to forget. This version has been passed down to me from another dev who probably got it form another dev.

When and How to Clearly Communicate a Feature

gdd game design document template

This section is critical for programmers and other designers to understand how the game should feel and function. So you’ll need to put a lot of thought into it, explore how similar mechanics work in other games, and write it all down as detailed as possible. If your team has game writers, you’ll probably want them to help you draft this section of the document based on their own story and character ideas. It’s not uncommon for this section to basically be a summary of a separate, story-focused document that the writers are busy creating as a supplement to the GDD. Your GDD can also be used as a sales tool, because it helps potential partners understand what’s unique about your game and evaluate its market potential. When you clearly outline the game’s mechanics, story, and visuals, it helps investors visualize the final product.

Generally speaking, the decision to use a game design document or not depends on how you like to work. However, there’s no set standard for what a game design document should be, what it should look like or what it should actually do. Whether you even need a game design document or not can be a surprisingly divisive issue. This final section is a bit of an amalgam of everything that didn't fit in the sections before hand. It's an appendix of all of the things that you didn't think were necessarily core to the game, but you'd like to consider along the way. It's also for alternate possibilities - for instance, if you had two main characters in mind, put the better one in the main document, and then the alternate here.

Elevator Pitch, Story Summary, and Comparable Games

Unless you are an indie game developer working solo, collaboration with your team and making sure everyone is on the same page is critical. Instead of trying to control the design process by giving your teammates selective access to your GDD, keep it as open as possible and work to discover and solve issues together. Whenever you need input or feedback from your colleagues, mention them in the document or leave a comment within your GDD in Nuclino to send them an instant notification. You have a great new game idea and you are itching to start building it right away. It's a feeling painfully familiar to most game developers, whether they are beginners preparing to create their first game, or seasoned professionals with a proven track record in the industry.

Page 6: Project Status Report

Keep things agile and be prepared that the final document might look nothing like what you started with. Nuclino preserves the previous versions of your document so you can easily undo the changes you made without losing any of your work. These GDDs are curated, compiled, and re-organized from /r/gamedesign, Mikael Segedi’s collection, and gamedocs.org.

However, it may not be possible to design your entire game on one page. However, if you’re trying to choose what kinds of attacks should be available to the player and how they will trigger them then a “Combat controls” page could work for that. It can be a specific problem or it can be a broad problem, but try to make it one thing, not several, by giving it a primary focus. For example, let’s say that you want to understand how the combat system is going to work in your game.

In the User Interface section, sketch out and describe the menus, heads-up display (HUD), and other on-screen elements that players will need to interact with. You should also explain how players will navigate menus, which options might be available, and how players will manage inventories or other game systems. We've got a great HL-GDD by this point but it doesn't even include the full set of documentation that a full game production will need. Nuclino brings all your team's knowledge, docs, and projects together in one place. It's a modern, simple, and blazingly fast way to collaborate, without the chaos of files and folders, context switching, or silos.

GDDs can contain any kind of relevant material for the game — including text, concept art, videos, musical references, photos, and even working prototypes or demos. There’s no rules about what you can or can’t include, so focus on things that will be useful and relevant to people throughout the development process. It’s common for this section to contain early “pencil and paper” mock-ups of potential game levels, to help readers get a better idea of what you have in mind.

Whatever specific form your GDD takes, it should effectively, efficiently communicate your design and the core features you (or you and your team) will need to build. Rosa is a Lead Game Designer and far more capable TikTok skater than I ever will be. Her template has helped numerous designers get started with their ideas. In the template linked at the end of this guide, I've included "starter considerations" for each of those 5 accessibility categories. These can be considered a starting point in assessing your game's level of accessibility, and can help point you in the right direction when considering how to make your game more accessible. Planning a Go To Market (GTM) is also critically important, even for free games.

The core mechanics and the mechanical loop section should go into detail about what your game's core mechanics are and how they work with or against each other. This is important not only as part of planning what your game is, but also to ensure your game's mechanics are complimentary, realistically scoped, and achievable by your team. With all of that information in hand and ready to go, make some centralized list of what you're working with. But otherwise, make a single bullet-point outline that covers the materials you already have.

It's good to keep your goals in mind at every step of the way, and having a dedicated goals section in your GDD can serve as a beacon for tough decisions along the development process. And remember the doc is just a structure, you have to be able to clearly articulate and demonstrate you designs decisions, which is a result of having a clear field tested design methodology. Keep your feature docs as short as possible while providing enough clarity to get you started on those first steps. With just a few paragraphs you have a general idea of the idea behind my game.

When George Boulenger retired, Procter took over from him at the British Museum. Her passion for nature began at a young age and in the ZSL Collection we have a book on reptiles gifted to her by her younger sister Chrystobel for her 13th birthday. The building itself was designed by Dr Joan Beauchamp Procter, Curator of Reptiles, with the architect Sir Edward Guy Dawber.

A few species may adapt relatively easily to a warmer, more variable climate. Ensuring that “corridors” are available for migration of salamanders northward to healthy, cooler habitats may work for other salamanders. Mountaintop species may require relocation if they become too pressured by climate change or competitive species. Finally, raising salamanders in human care will establish an assurance colony to guard against extinction in the wild and provide more opportunities for research.

We teach that all areas of science (and other studies) all work together to keep our biosphere functional. While reptiles are known for being creepy critters, they also are some of the most specular animals on the planet. This afternoon, we went down to the Reptile House to meet with Ms. Rachael Walton, a Senior Reptile Keeper at the San Diego Zoo. Throughout our experience, we got to go behind the scenes, actually going inside the Reptile House to get a closer look at some of the Zoo’s reptile and amphibian collection. All the while, Ms. Walton shared with us what she does on a day-to-day basis, and what the Zoo is doing to conserve these incredible creatures.

Kiki Poison Dart Frog

Often, Ms. Walton will have to sift through the dirt of the different encloses to try and collect tortoise eggs to safety house and incubate them, ensuring these baby tortoises have the best chance of survival. The main reason as to why many species of reptiles and amphibians are endangered is the direct threat from humans. If you want to help amphibians and reptiles around the globe here in San Diego, then make sure to spread the word! Many people are uneducated and do not know that the turtle in the pet store is endangered or the snake on the hiking trail is harmless.

The Reptile House & Rescue is our area’s only 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated reptile and amphibian no-kill animal shelter and rescue. We are also our region's only Rescue Zoo with over 60 rehabilitated reptiles and amphibians on exhibit and used as educational ambassadors. Most reptiles make nests or dig holes to lay their eggs in, although some snakes and lizards (about 20 percent of them) give live birth. Some, like crocodiles and alligators and some of snakes, stay to guard the nest after laying their eggs and even help the hatchlings get started in life. But most mother reptiles leave the nest once the eggs are laid.

Currently we have a gray-necked wood-rail and a red-footed tortoise. I did a lot of research before settling in this enclosure and I’m glad I did. The enclosure is beautiful and helps me keep my temperatures and humidity in range with little effort. None of these problems are too big for us to come together and solve. Reptiles are vertebrates, they have scaly skin that keeps their bodies from drying out, and their young do not go through a larva stage like amphibians but instead look like small versions of the adults when they emerge. Reptiles are ectotherms, so they must bask in the sun or find a warm spot to get warm and become active, and they must find shade or a cool spot to cool off. In cold conditions they become sluggish and don't move around much, and some enter a state of torpor or brumation (similar to hibernation) if it will be cold for a long time. Our large South American exhibit is a mixed species exhibit where you can see animals living harmoniously from the exhibit floor to the tops of the trees.

House Of The Dragon: a Targaryen family tree character guide

house of the dragon family tree

Unfortunately, Rivers managed to escape, and within a few years, the Blackfyres were back, claiming Haegon’s son Daemon was the true King of Westeros. You’d think after all these failed rebellions, the Blackfyres would have learned a thing or two about combat, but unfortunately, they did not. At the Battle of Wendwater Bridge, Daemon was killed by Ser Duncan, the Tall of the Kingsguard. While the rebellion was crushed and Daemon killed, his third son Daemon II survived, and 15 years after his father’s death, the would-be King attempted to seize the Throne for himself. Thankfully, the actions of Bloodraven (Himself, one of Aegon IV’s bastards) managed to kill the insurgency in its infancy, and Daemon’s son was killed.

The Targaryen family tree: who's who in House of the Dragon?

Rumors abound that she poisoned her own husband, the king, in order to hasten his demise and crown Aegon while Rhaenyra’s back was effectively turned. She remains enamored all her life with her own uncle, Daemon, who’s 16 years older. She also has a thing for a dashing knight named Criston Cole (played by Fabien Frankel), who we see getting flirty with her in the first ep.

Aegon “The Conqueror” Targaryen

He was succeeded by his younger brother Baelor, who would earn the nickname the Blessed for his pious nature. For the record, the Targaryen family tree is like an ancient oak that’s not been pruned in centuries. To simplify things, we’ve broken the tree up into bite-sized chunks and only focussed on the direct line of kings; so sorry if you were a fan of that random Targaryen who’s the second cousin of ‘Valeagaerysion’ or whatever. House Targaryen is one of the oldest and most venerable noble families in Westeros, with a lineage going back hundreds of years to a time before the House of the Dragon ruled from the Iron Throne. By the time of Game of Thrones, though, the Targaryens have fallen from glory, and the family is close to extinction.

Rhaenyra Targaryen

Aegon is a common name for Targaryen sons, that comes up several times in the family tree. This Prince Aegon is the firstborn son of Viserys I and his second wife, Alicent Hightower. As the firstborn son of the king, a faction of lords want him to be named heir pretty much as soon as he's born, though Rhaenyra was named heir years prior. As of Episode 6, he's a bratty teenager who has yet to grapple with his birthright as Rhaenyra's strongest opponent in the succession.

At the beginning of the show, she’s a woman of the court who largely keeps Rhaenyra Targaryen company. But Otto encourages Alicent to comfort King Viserys after his wife’s death and become invaluable to the ruler. Alicent, convinced that Rhaenyra will murder her children in order to secure the Iron Throne, becomes increasingly invested in positioning Aegon II as Viserys’ true heir. A deathbed misunderstanding leads her to push to have her son Aegon crowned as king after her husband, Viserys, dies. As the child of Jaehaerys’ eldest son Aemon, Rhaenys (Eve Best) theoretically should have been the first in line for the throne. But because Westeros is a sexist place, the lords balked at the idea of a woman ruling over them.

The Storm Lands briefly rose up against the King, and again, Duncan the Tall was forced to step in and end the threat with his sword. Inevitably, Aegon IV eventually passed away, his swollen body literally rotting from the inside out as if the moral corruption had infected his own flesh. With Aegon dead, Daeron ascended to the throne and became Daeron II Targaryen, but the unworthy king played one final trick on his son.

The short reign of Jaehaerys II (259 AC – 262 AC)

Ser Tyland Lannister of Casterly Rock serves on King Viserys I’s Small Council, and his brother Ser Jason Lannister is among those hoping to marry the King’s daughter, Princess Rhaenyra and advance his family’s position. Tyland and Jason are played by the same actor – Jefferson Hall, who played Torstein in Vikings, Thorne Geary in Taboo and Pete in Devs. This one’s straightforward – or as straightforward a lineage can be when incest is widely practised and everybody’s wife is also their aunt and sister. House of the Dragon’s Targaryens have been the royal family in Westeros for over a hundred years, since their ancestor Aegon the Conqueror founded the Targaryen dynasty and united the Seven Kingdoms under the Iron Throne. In total, the family would rule for 300 years until Robert Baratheon led a rebellion against Mad King Aerys II and usurped the Iron Throne.

Jaehaerys

For 12 years, they lived there until the doom Daenys had predicted came true, wiping out the rest of the dragonlords. Viserys later remarries Alicent Hightower, who gives birth to his first-born son, Aegon II. Jaehaeyrs's reign lasted 55 years, marking the longest ever reign for a monarch of the Seven Kingdoms.

house of the dragon family tree

When we first meet the duo in GoT, they’re preparing for her wedding to Khal Drogo—a union orchestrated entirely by Viserys, without Dany’s consent. Arrogant, self-serving Viserys has agreed to allow the Dothraki warlord to wed Dany in return for military support in his plans to reclaim the Iron Throne. Before the Baratheons (and the Lannisters behind the scenes) ruled over Westeros in Game of Thrones, there was King Aerys II, the last Targaryen to sit on the Iron Throne. "The Mad King" was initially beloved during his peaceful reign, before he slowly became paranoid, erratic, and murderous (possibly due to the Targaryen tradition of inbreeding).

His presumed ascent to the Iron Throne is challenged by his older sister, Princess Rhaenyra, who was previously designated as Viserys's heir. Rhaenys, or the Queen Who Never Was, was the only child of Aemon, King Jaehaeyrs's heir. She seemed to be the natural successor to the Iron Throne following the passing of Jaehaeyrs's sons, but the Great Council voted to instead pass the throne to her male cousin, Viserys. He assumed he would be his brother's heir to the throne before Viserys chose his daughter Rhaenyra  in his place.

Aegon does eventually ascend the throne, but only after an episode is dedicated to learning about his depraved behavior among the people of Flea Bottom after he escapes the Red Keep. Rhaenyra is the first-born child of Viserys and his first wife Aemma Arryn. As such, she has a legitimate claim to the throne, but the age-old issue of her being a woman raises its ugly head.

Lady Rhaena had hoped to get her mother's dragon Vhagar but was supplanted by Prince Aemond. The two girls grew up with their parents in Pentos and carry the Valyrian blood of both House Targaryen and House Velaryon. Lady Baela Targaryen and Lady Rhaena Targaryen are the twin daughters of Prince Daemon Targaryen and Lady Laena Velaryon. Lady Laena Velaryon is the daughter of Lord Corlys Velaryon and Princess Rhaenys Targaryen and the older sister of Ser Laenor Velaryon.
